Yesterday we had our 2nd to last club tournament here. In addition to a front coming thru and then leaving clear skies behind, it was a cold front to boot. The 46 degree starting temp was very cold and a big hint of fall coming.
Fishing was tough with not that many legals caught. Big fish for the day was 4.5# but came from a small bag. I think the most legals caught by any single member was 3.
Fish related primarily to the deep weed edges with fish being caught by by a lot of jig combinations and other finesse techniques, although I managed two legals and missed another one on a spinnerbait bite. The windy and cold conditions made for a tough day of fishing and made boat control difficult if not drifting with it. There didn't seem to be much of a slop bite even thought there were areas that looked promising. I got a few blowups but they appeared to be small fish and didn't connect. The bait may have been too big for their mouth!! There are a lot of weeds on this flowage but a majority of them are in thick mats that don't make for a lot of productive fishing. The river area of the flowage seemed to be the most productive overall.
The fish seemed to turn on the last hour of the tournament day. I ended up with a lot of short fish and some northerns, and managed to lose a legal during that time. I caught fish thoughout the day but that last hour seemed to be the best for numbers of fish even thought there was no size to the bass for me or my partner.
